CDC monitoring measles outbreak in 21 states, including Oregon

Health officials warn we are on track for a more infectious year than usual with cases cropping up from coast to coast. The CDC says most of the 107 infections are reported in unvaccinated people CDC monitoring measles outbreak in 21 states, including Oregon

A total of 107 people from 21 states have been affected, and it's projected that this year's total will be greater than the number of cases reported in 2017, the CDC said.

The CDC says the measles virus is "highly contagious" and can be spread to others by coughing or sneezing. The majority of those cases were in people who were not vaccinated.

"The 107 cases reported to CDC have been since January 2018 across 21 states, but they are not one unified outbreak".

The total number of cases per year in the USA usually hovers around 100, aside from 2014 when an outbreak led to 667 cases. Numerous cases in the U.S.in 2014 were associated with cases brought in from the Philippines, which experienced a large measles outbreak.

2015: The United States experienced a large, multi-state measles outbreak linked to an amusement park in California. People with the disease can remain contagious for up to four days. Symptoms show up in 10 to 14 days after exposure. A red or reddish-brown rash also appears, first on the face at the hairline and spreading down to the entire body.

"Two doses of MMR vaccine are 97% effective against measles and 88% effective against mumps", the CDC says.

Measles is one of the leading causes of death for children, according to the World Health Organization, which estimates that 450 die each day worldwide due to the illness. Vaccination is now the only effective way to prevent measles.

"About 3 out of 100 people who get two doses of MMR vaccine will get measles if exposed to the virus", the agency notes.
