As in numerous wildfires burning across the state, steep terrain in the Holy Fire is making it hard for fire crews and engines to get close to the flames.

Thick smoke and ash spewing from the fire prompted air quality warnings.

More than 1,500 firefighters, 86 water-dropping helicopters, and 14 fixed-wing aircraft have been fighting the blaze, believed to have been started by 51-year-old Forrest Gordon Clark.

If all goes well, firefighters still don't expect to the have the massive blaze completely contained until sometime in September.

After a month of burning, the Ferguson Fire has singed 96,457 acres across three national forests and private land.

To the family's surprise, their pet fish had survived the California fires because fire fighters and police officers fed him as they investigated the home. It is still at 61 percent containment at 61 percent containment at over 201,000 acres.

A very large army of firefighters are still battling the two fires, including 256 fire engines, 58 fire crews, 20 helicopters, 76 dozers, and 79 water tenders, for a total of 3,221 personnel.

The increasing containment was good news but did not necessarily mean the wildfire season was dying down, Cal Fire spokesman Cary Wright said.

Below Cal Fire's message, some thoughtful member of the Corning PD also wrote a message, even including the date and time when Grant was fed.

- CalFire along with U.S. Forest Service have confirmed the death of a firefighter in the Mendocino Complex Fire Monday evening. The fires had burned a combined total of 325,226 acres and was 67 percent contained.

The River Fire, the smaller of two blazes that make up the Mendocino Complex, has been mostly contained at almost 49,000 acres since Saturday, Cal Fire reported. Crews are working to establish contingency dozer lines in advance of the fire's possible movement north further into the Mendocino National Forest. As it has grown to cover more than 202,000 acres, 1,077 homes, 22 commercial structures and 500 other buildings have burned.
