Heightened concern spurred by the poisoning of a former Russian spy in Salisbury, England is prompting US national security officials to consider seriously the prospect of a similar attack, current and former officials said. On Tuesday the rouble rate had stood at 63.4.

Former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal, along with daughter Yulia, was found unconscious on a bench in Salisbury.

9 responded to new USA sanctions accusing it of conducting an illegal chemical attack, calling them "unacceptable". Russian blue-chip stocks plunged as much as 9%, led by state banks and national airline.

The euro also gained against the rouble, which slumped to a rate of 76.8. British police scoured sections of Salisbury and Amesbury in southwest England, searching for a container feared to be contaminated with traces of the deadly nerve agent Novichok.

Photo Yulia Skripal is now at an undisclosed location after recovering from the poisoning.

Also in March, Washington ordered the expulsion of 60 Russian diplomats, and the closure of Russia's consulate general in Seattle over the Novichok incident.

UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt thanked the United States on Thursday in a tweet.

Russia's economy had demonstrated it was stable in the face of past sanctions, as well as fluctuations in the oil price, he said in a statement.

Lawmakers from Russia's ruling party accused USA politicians of treating the country like a punching bag in their partisan infighting and in midterm campaigning.

The State Department said the sanctions were aimed at punishing Moscow for having "used chemical or biological weapons in violation of worldwide law", mandated under the Chemical and Biological Weapons and Warfare Elimination Act of 1991.

The Russian embassy in the U.S. hit back on Thursday morning. The Russian embassy said Moscow continued to advocate for an open and transparent investigation into the poisoning.

According to the State Department, those sanctions will include the presumed denial of export licenses for Russian Federation to purchase many items with national security implications.

The sanctions are created to target electronic devices and some large equipment, including aircraft gas turbine engines, with an exemption for equipment used for mutual U.S. -Russia space exploration. These could go as far as a ban on Russian airlines using USA airports.

According to the law, it could include downgrading diplomatic relations, suspending national flag carrier Aeroflot's ability to fly to the United States and cutting off almost all exports and imports.

"Sanctions are the U.S. weapon of choice", Trenin wrote on Twitter.

A senior Russian lawmaker denounced the sanctions as "lynch law".

All are prohibited from any transactions involving the U.S. financial system.

"Once again we deny in the strongest terms the accusations about the possible connection of the Russian state to what happened in Salisbury". Those sanctions restrict travel and financial transactions.

Several members of Congress had expressed concern the Trump administration was dragging its feet on the determination and had missed a deadline to publish its findings.

She said sanctions would take effect on or around August 22.

The leaders, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin had met at summit in Helsinki.

What was the nerve agent?
