A United States senator who met with Russian lawmakers in Moscow said he invited them to visit Washington and they accepted Monday.

"Engagement is vital to our national security and peace around the world", Paul said.

"I think this is incredibly important, " Paul said after the high-profile sit-down.

"Senator Rand Paul is visiting Russian Federation as part of a private group, " said a representative of the US Embassy in Moscow. That committee is the Russian equivalent of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee that Paul sits on. Although the specific date of this visit was not announced, a visit by members of the Russian Federation to Congress would be the first in nearly three years.

"We know you as an authoritative, independent American politician", Kosachev told Paul as they began their meeting, saying his visit was "especially valuable given the attitudes of other American politicians", who he said presented any contact with Russian officials as "toxic".

The Kentucky Republican said it was agreed that a delegation of council members would visit the USA capital.

Paul, however, has stood by Trump, despite his remarks in Helsinki.

With Putin by his side, Trump questioned USA intelligence findings that Russians had meddled in elections and called investigations into the matter a "disaster for our country".

Paul is a key supporter of Trump's controversial interactions with Putin, heralding the leaders' Helsinki summit last month as exactly the sort of action Washington should be taking to mend ties between the two.

It was "opposition research", Trump said, not collusion. Trump later walked back the remark and said he trusted the USA intelligence community's assessment Moscow did interfere.

Kosachev was less reserved, telling reporters that Russia's position was simple - there had been no Russian interference in the 2016 election "and consequently, there won't be any in this year either".

"Of course, Mr. Paul is yet to discuss these ideas with his colleagues after returning to Washington", Kosachyov said.
