Storm strengthens to Hurricane John off Mexico's coast

Hurricane Hector The Hawaii Coast Guard issued the warning because “winds 39 mph or higher are possible”

A tropical storm watch has been issued for the Big Island of Hawaii as Hurricane Hector on Tuesday kept churning west across the Pacific as a powerful Category 4 hurricane. Hector is expected to weaken over cooler water before its center passes within 200 miles of the Big Island later this week, according to AccuWeather, though the island's southern tip is included in the NHC's five-day storm forecast cone.

"Very rough surf is expected to impact mostly south- and east-facing coastal areas of the Big Island", AccuWeather meteorologist Dan Kottlowski said.

"A few heavier showers are possible in the east and north on Friday morning, but the overall trend of the day is for the showers to ease from the south, becoming increasingly isolated during the afternoon".

However, Hector could bring at least parts of the Big Island tropical-storm-force winds (39-plus mph) today, particularly on the southern tip of the island and eastward-facing coasts.

The CSU has forecast nine more named storms before the season ends in November, with three expected to become hurricanes and one a major hurricane.

Hurricane Hector, with 130 mph winds, is about 540 miles east-southeast of Hilo.

The active season in the Pacific contrasts to the relatively quiet season in the Atlantic.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will release its updated mid-season hurricane forecast on Thursday. Depending on its ultimate track, the storm could bring thunderstorms, gusty winds and increased surf to parts of the island and could also cause unsafe rip currents off the east- and south-facing beaches. Debby is the fourth named storm of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season.

Subtropical storm Debby has officially formed in the deep Atlantic.
