Samsung is building a high-speed 4TB SSD for everyone

Shattered hard disk Samsung is building a high-speed 4TB SSD for everyone

Samsung claims its drive will be the "industry's first 4-bit consumer SSD", but we'll have to see about that.

Samsung says it figured out how to make the 4-bit SSD have the same performance levels as 3-bit SSDs: the new drives feature sequential read speeds of 540MB/s and sequential write speeds of 520MB/s (Samsung's current EVO 4TB does 550MB/s and 520MB/s, respectively).

But Samsung's new line of SSDs might change that.

The hype surrounding recent 4-bit quad-level cell (QLC) NAND flash memory chip announcements has been that they will lead to bigger capacity and more affordable solid state drives.

The company said that as data stored within a memory cell increases from three bits to four, the chip capacity per unit area would typically rise and the electrical charge - which is used to determine information from a sensor - would decrease by as much as 50%.

And Samsung reckons this SSD tech will filter through the rest of the memory world, which could yield cheaper high-capacity SSDs for consumers.

Samsung hasn't announced pricing yet or precise availability beyond saying "later this year". And Samsung predicts that its new 1-terabit 4-bit V-NAND chip will enable the company to produce large capacity memory for smartphones, too.

The new 4-bit Samsung 4TB SSD will be arriving sometime later this year with a 3-year warranty alongside 2TB and 1TB versions in the common 2.5-inch form factor.

'Samsung's new 4-bit SATA SSD will herald a massive move to terabyte-SSDs for consumers, ' predicts Samsung's Jaesoo Han of the impending launch. The company will also offer M.2 NVMe SSDs for enterprise this year.

The Samsung 4TB 850 EVO SSD is now listed on Amazon.co.uk with a £1,399.99 retail price (albeit discounted to £999.99 at present).
