The new discovery can make boffins believe that they may have a novel way of detecting and finding exoplanets, including rogue ones that are hard to identify since they are not orbiting a parent star like the planets do in our solar system. It is simply floating through space without any tethers to a star.

A unusual 200 million-year-old object with the mass of a planet has been discovered 20 light-years from Earth, outside our solar system.

The massive planet is 20 light years away from Earth. Brown dwarves are hard objects to categorise they are too huge to be considered planets and not big enough to be considered stars. The object is about 13 times heavier that Jupiter, and doesn't appear to orbit a parent star.

Researchers have discovered a "rogue" planet outside of our solar system using the Very Large Array (VLA), the first time such a discovery has been made using a radio telescope.

This object is 12.7 times more massive than Jupiter, and at this size, researchers can't tell for sure if it's a starless rogue planet or a brown dwarf.

The planet is 20 light-years from Earth and is exceptionally hot, with a surface temperature of more than 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit. It's an absolutely massive alien world that is almost big enough to be classified as a brown dwarf.

This is the first planetary mass object detected with a radio telescope.

Journal Reference: "The Strongest Magnetic Fields on the Coolest Brown Dwarfs", by M. Kao et al.in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series. It also has a magnetic field about 200 times as strong as our infamously spotted neighbor's, driving auroras much like our own, except with a lack of a sun, SIMP's auroras are likely caused by magnetic play with one of its own moons.

The surprising find is peculiar because it could be a planet or a brown dwarf.

SIMP was first detected in 2016 as one of five brown dwarfs, but it was later believed to be something else after astronomers collected more data to identify its age.

Last year, an independent team of scientists discovered that SIMP J01365663+0933473 was part of a very young group of stars. Gregg Hallinan of the Caltech said that such a powerful magnetic field raises new questions for our understanding of the dynamical mechanism generating such fields in brown dwarfs and extrasolar planets, and lights on them.
