The event changed the course of World War II and demonstrated the unbelievably devastating force of nuclear weapons.

On July 7, 2017 the United Nations adopted the first legally binding worldwide agreement to prohibit nuclear weapons titled the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

"If the human family forgets history or stops confronting it, we could again commit a awful error", Matsui said at the event on Monday.

U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres said in his message the legacy of Hiroshima is one of "resilience" and sought continued moral support from hibakusha survivors.

Tens of thousands of people were killed instantly, and by the end of 1945, about 140,000 had died because of the effects of the attack. Matsui urged leaders to steadily work toward achieving a world without atomic weapons.

About 50,000 people, including bomb survivors, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and representatives from more than 80 countries, observed a minute's silence at 8:15 am, the moment 73 years ago when a U.S. B-29 bomber dropped the bomb. Japan, which hosts USA troops on its land and falls under the protections of the US's nuclear umbrella, has not signed the treaty. "We in civil society fervently hope that the easing of tensions on the Korean Peninsula will proceed through peaceable dialogue", Matsui said.

But reports suggest Tokyo is considering a summit soon between Kim and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with local media floating a possible meeting on the sidelines of an worldwide forum in Russia's Vladivostok next month.

The anniversary comes amid hopes to denuclearise North Korea after President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un made vague aspirational statements of denuclearising the peninsula when they met in Singapore in June.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, attending the memorial ceremony, pledged that Japan will try to bridge nuclear powers and non-nuclear states and lead worldwide efforts.

Speaking at the ceremony, Abe said Japan will try to act as a bridge between nuclear powers and non-nuclear states and lead global efforts for a world without nuclear weapons.

Tomie Makita, 88, of Hiroshima pays a visit to the park every year on August 6 to remember the bombing that claimed the lives of her friends.

The final death toll is estimated at 140,000 and - along with the bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki three days later - ended Japan's involvement in the Second World War.

Barack Obama became the first sitting USA president to visit Hiroshima in May 2016.
