Disney CEO Bob Iger Teases Fox Marvel Content For Streaming Service

The Live-Action Star Wars Show Will Reportedly Be Very Expensive Jon Favreau Star Wars Series Has a $100 Million Budget

With the Disney-branded entertainment service, Disney will have more control over its movies and TV shows from creation to distribution.

While the service will feature Pixar, Marvel, Disney and National Geographic content as well as Star Wars, Disney aims to maximise the value of its content investment through its distribution windowing strategy.

As part of a larger report about Disney tapping Ricky Strauss, Walt Disney Studios' current president of marketing, to manage its still incredibly nebulous (and untitled) streaming service planned to launch next year, The New York Times snuck in a brief little tidbit about Jon Favreau's upcoming live-action Star Wars show, which will be set seven years after the climax of Return of the Jedi, a still mostly-unexplored period in the 30 years between the original Star Wars films and The Force Awakens.

We're still not sure exactly when Disney's streaming platform will launch, nor what it'll be called, or how much subscriptions will cost.

In the works for the Disney service are a live-action "Star Wars" series, new episodes of the animated "Star Wars" series "Clone Wars", a live-action version of "Lady and the Tramp", and new series related to the "High School Musical" and "Monsters Inc." movies.

Speaking to analysts after the company reported less-than-stellar Q3 results, Iger said that Disney will "continue to move full steam ahead with our direct-to-consumer strategy", which he referred to in his remarks as "Disney Play", with last year's acquisition of the BAMTech technology outfit enabling it to enter the OTT TV space "quickly and effectively". This, as Disney CEO Bob Iger noted, will be reflected in the price.

Launching the streaming services is Disney's biggest priority next year, Iger said.

Disney, which has been pushing up prices at its theme parks in recent years, saw the latest price hike lead to a slim 1 percent gain in USA theme park attendance in the period - down from an 8 percent increase last year - while hotel occupancy rates dropped to 86 percent from 88 percent.

Net income attributable to Disney rose to $2.92 billion, or $1.95 per share, in the quarter, compared with $2.37 billion, or $1.51 per share, a year ago. Adjusted earnings per share totaled $1.87, less than the Street's expectation of $1.95.

Operating profits in its consumer products unit, the smallest division, slipped 10 percent on an 8 percent drop in revenue - due mainly to lower licensing revenue from "Spider-Man" and "Cars".
