Since then, the two have been engaged in an ongoing custody battle for their six children - Maddox, 16, Pax, 14, Zahara, 13, Shiloh, 12, and 10-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox ― as their seemingly never-ending and often combative divorce proceedings continue.
The ongoing saga of the Brangelina split is back in the headlines after Angelina Jolie's attorneys filed a complaint that claims Brad Pitt has paid no "meaningful" child support since the couple announced their intention to divorce almost two years ago.
"The aim of Angelina's routine court filing is to provide closure to the marriage in a way that clears a path toward the next stage of their lives and allows her and Brad to recommit as devoted co-parents to their children", her spokeswoman, Mindy Nyby, told "Good Morning America" in a statement.
"[Pitt] has a statutory duty to pay child support".
CNN has reached out to both Pitt and Jolie's representatives for comment.
According to documents obtained by NBC News, the 43-year-old actress/director claims Pitt has not stuck to the "informal" deal they had in place following their separation in September, 2016 - and now she wants back pay.
The document also said that Pitt has "paid no meaningful child support since separation" and said that although informal arrangements had been made with him, payments "had not been regularly sustained".
People close to Pitt think that Jolie pre-emptively filed the papers as a warning shot, because Pitt had told her he wanted to restart the formal divorce process.
Pitt was later provided with cell phone numbers for each child, in order to text and call them without Jolie's supervision.
In the filing, Jolie's lawyers requested to appear before a judge to schedule a status conference to address the financial issue.
