After three grueling wins, the last ending at 3:01am Friday morning, Andy Murray withdrew from his Washington quarterfinal with Alex De Minaur and also announced he would not take the wildcard into Toronto next week.

Andy Murray has withdrawn from next week's Rogers Cup in Toronto to continue his recovery from hip surgery. Murray, a three-time major champion coming back from hip surgery, finished his most recent match at 3 a.m. Friday and made a decision to withdraw rather than play again so soon afterward.

"I'm exhausted after playing so much over the past four days, having not competed on the hard courts for 18 months", Murray said in a statement on the ATP website.

"I'm giving my view right now as someone who's just come back from a very, very long injury layoff", he said.

All tennis fans rejoiced at his pain-free movement and fitness levels shown to win three such draining matches.

With storms forecast to return about the time Murray's match would start, he could face an early quarter-final and late semi on Saturday. When play resumed, Zverev took a second break thanks to a series of errors by Nishikori and closed out the match.

I don't think I should be put in a position like that.

"I need to be smart with my rest and recovery".

O'Brien said: "I hope that Andy really takes into consideration this role in his sport and as a global role model to guys and girls on the tour and kids around the world that, when things are hard and tough and the conditions aren't great, it's not OK to just give up".

Asked after beating Copil how his body is holding up, Murray replied: "It doesn't feel great, just now".

Tournament director Keely O'Brien had earlier caused controversy with comments to the Washington Post encouraging Murray to play.

After the match, a shattered-looking Murray wept into a towel for several minutes, calling it, "just the emotions coming at the end of an extremely long day and a long match", Murray said.

The former world No. 1 had to dig deep after conceding a 5-0 advantage in the first-set tie break to lose 7-5, but Murray twice broke Copil in the second set to force a decider.

Defending champion Alexander Zverev returned to the Citi Open semifinals by coming back for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over No. 7 seed Kei Nishikori at the rain-drenched tournament Friday.
