NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France is taking "an indefinite leave of absence" after he was arrested in The Hamptons late Sunday night and charged with DUI.

Police said France appeared to be driving while intoxicated Sunday in Sag Harbor, New York.

TMZ reported that the 55-year-old was pulled over in Sag Harbor, N.Y. and failed a field sobriety test after officers suspected France was intoxicated.

Police said France was released at 9:30 a.m. Monday after arraignment.

France has taken an indefinite leave of absence in light of his arrest, NASCAR announced Monday. Effective immediately, NASCAR Vice Chairman and Executive Vice President Jim France has assumed the role of interim chairman and chief executive officer. NASCAR made no further comment on Brian France's arrest.

Upon searching France, the authorities found oxycodone pills, a controlled substance in the seventh degree.

The company previously called France's arrest a "serious matter".

France became chairman and CEO of NASCAR in 2003, a position that makes him one of the most powerful figures in sports.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicle website lists the penalties for alcohol and drug-related violations.

Aggravated driving while intoxicated in NY is when someone registers a blood alcohol content of 0.18 percent or higher.

France last month characterized as "rumors" reports that his family was looking into selling its racing properties. He's the grandson of NASCAR cofounder Bill France Sr. There's nothing to report on that. France told Daytona Beach police that he hit the tree when he was taking a drink of a soda.

But a witness called 911 and gave police a statement that claimed she saw France driving at a "very reckless speed", and claimed France's auto hit the tree after hitting a parked vehicle.
