Israel says its naval blockade of Gaza is meant to prevent weapons from reaching militant groups, including Hamas, the Islamist movement that controls the Palestinian enclave.

The Israeli navy seized a Swedish-flagged sailboat attempting to breach a blockade of the Palestinian Gaza Strip on Saturday, the military said.

It was the latest in a series of protests along Gaza's perimeter fence with Israel, aimed in part at trying to break an 11-year-old border blockade.

The leaders of the terror group Hamas, including many of those in exile, gathered for the first time in Gaza on Friday to discuss a potential extended cease-fire with Israel.

Meanwhile, the cancellation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's planned visit to Colombia is believed to be related to the "developments in Gaza", according to Israeli media, which referred to speculation that he needs to be available due to the possibility that there might be a breakthrough in talks between the Tel Aviv administration and Palestinian sides.

The paper reported on Friday the deal stipulated that Hamas must commit to "the end of the provocations along the border, or in other words, the phenomena of the flaming kites and balloons, border crossing operations and setting fire to border posts". They then fled back to the Gaza Strip, and in response, an IDF tank attacked a position belonging to the Hamas. Power is on for just a few hours a day, unemployment has sky-rocketed and poverty is widening. Others, among them armed Hamas militants, have been killed in attempted border attacks or in Israeli airstrikes.

More than 140 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since the outbreak of the Gaza border protests on March 30. Several thousand Gazans have been wounded by Israeli fire since March.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has canceled a South American trip planned for next week due to the situation around the Gaza Strip, an Israeli official said on Thursday, as United Nations ceasefire talks pressed on.

In a statement, Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said it included Marzouk, Rishq and Badran as well as Khalil al Hayya and Rawhi Mushtaha.

The organizer of the trip, the Swedish group Ship to Gaza, said the boat was carrying mainly medical supplies and maintained it was wrongly intercepted in global waters.

The coalition said Friday that the Swedish-flagged vessel, Freedom, was almost 60 miles (95 kilometers) off the coast.

A similar incident took place last Sunday, when the Israel Navy stopped a boat flying under a Norwegian flag.

The Israeli military had no immediate comment.

Since 2008, activists from all over the world have sailed 31 boats in attempts to challenge the Israeli naval blockade on Gaza.

Associated Press writers Fares Akram in Amman, Jordan, Ian Deitch in Jerusalem and Mohammed Daraghmeh in Ramallah, West Bank contributed.
