Back in 2016, Steven Seagal was awarded Russian citizenship, likely because he was making so many trips to visit his friend Vladimir Putin.

Steven Seagal once referred to Putin as "one of the great living world leaders". Seagal has said that it's "stupid" to think that Russian Federation or any other country has the technology to tamper with voting.

Action hero Steven Seagal has been appointed by Russian Federation as a special envoy for humanitarian ties with the US.

Russian Federation has appointed the USA actor Steven Seagal as a special envoy to improve ties with the United States.

"It's a case of people's diplomacy intersecting with traditional diplomacy", the ministry said of the appointment, likening Seagal's role to that of a United Nations goodwill ambassador. Former co-stars have often talked about the actor's violent temper on the set of his movies, which doesn't really bode well for negotiating peace between two countries. He has been accused by more than a dozen women of sexual misconduct.

As for Russian and United States relations now, things are a bit contentious, to say the least.

In November 2016, the Kremlin announced that Seagal had received Russian citizenship.

In 2015, BuzzFeed News reported that two years earlier, Putin had suggested to then-US President Barack Obama that he could make Seagal the honourary Russian consul to California and Arizona. He had this to say. "The task is to facilitate relations between Russian Federation and the United States in the humanitarian field, including cooperation in culture, arts, public and youth exchanges, and so on". "I take this honour very seriously", he wrote on Twitter.

A statement on the ministry's Facebook page on Saturday said the position was "socio-political" and the actor would not be paid.

In 2013, BuzzFeed reported that Putin suggested to President Barack Obama that Seagal serve as an honorary envoy of Russian Federation to help improve relations between the two countries.
