Conor is back: UFC says McGregor will fight Oct. 6 in Vegas

Conor McGregor vs Khabib Nurmagomedov Announced For UFC 229 Conor McGregor to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in Las Vegas

McGregor, 30, hasn't set foot inside the Octagon since claiming the lightweight title 20 months ago in the main event of UFC 205, a card where he became the promotion's first simultaneous two-weight world champion.

McGregor also has resolved his legal troubles after throwing a hand truck at a bus containing UFC fighters during a one-man rampage last April at Brooklyn's Barclays Center.

McGregor was arrested, but was sentenced last month to perform five days of community service, avoiding jail time in a plea deal. UFC president Dana White downplayed the idea when asked during the conference.

Nurmagomedov was the intended target of McGregor's wrath after a previous spat between the fighters' camps.

The undefeated Russian fighter challenged McGregor for a fight after the incident, which White had labeled "the most disgusting thing ever happened in UFC history".

ESPN's Brett Okamoto writes, "Nurmagomedov has replaced McGregor as the most dominant force in the division, and is the No. 3 pound-for-pound fighter in the world according to ESPN".

McGregor had initiated the bus attack in response to Nurmagomedov and his team's cornering of Artem Lobov, who is one of the Irishman's good friends, ahead of UFC 223.

In a video interview this week, the San Jose-based Nurmagomedov touted his belt and his dominance in pushing the UFC to properly pay him in accordance with McGregor, the organization's leading draw.

As it played, Diaz abruptly left the presser he was at and tweeted "I'm not fighting on that show (expletive) the UFC".

Those include a September 8 pay-per-view card in Dallas headlined by the Tyron Woodley-Darren Till welterweight title fight and a December 29 card in Las Vegas likely to feature a fight between women's champions Cris Cyborg and Amanda Nunes, although negotiations continue.
