Apple removes conspiracy theory personality Alex Jones from iTunes over hate speech

Melba Vasquez | 06 August, 2018, 19:57

Apple, Spotify and Facebook each removed the majority of conservative radio show host Alex Jones' content from their platforms, citing community guidelines against hate speech.

The controversial conspiracy theorist and talk show host has found himself on the end of Facebook's ban hammer once again.

Polgreen's reaction to the news implied Facebook was too slow to ban the pages. "We believe in representing a wide range of views, so long as people are respectful to those with differing opinions".

Jones was not available to respond to news agency requests for comment on Monday.

Last week Spotify removed several episodes of "The Alex Jones Show", following similar moves by YouTube and Facebook the week before. He is now being sued in Texas by two Sandy Hook parents, seeking at least $1 million, claiming that they have been the subject of harassment driven by his programs.

Jones, whose site InfoWars has accused victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting of being "actors" in a plot to discredit the gun lobby, had violated Facebook's hate speech policies, the social network said.

Jones is now facing several defamation suits stemming from his claims that school shootings like the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre and this year's Parkland shooting were "false flag" operations put on by left-wing forces in order to drum up support for gun control policies.

In addition, after Trump won the election, American political journalism company Politico reported that he called Jones, saying "Listen, Alex, I just talked to kings and queens of the world, world leaders, you name it, but he said it doesn't matter, I wanted to talk to you, to thank your audience, and I'll be on the next few weeks to thank them". It has suggested that the Sandy Hook massacre was a hoax, and that the September 11 terrorist attacks were an inside job orchestrated by the USA government.

"Podcasts that violate these guidelines are removed from our directory making them no longer searchable or available for download or streaming", Apple said in a statement.

YouTube, which is dealing with its own fake news problem, recently hit Jones and InfoWars with a second "strike", but the man and his show have not been banned yet from their service.

For his part, Jones says he's simply "playing a character". "When users violate these policies repeatedly, like our policies against hate speech and harassment or our terms prohibiting circumvention of our enforcement measures, we terminate their accounts".

In the deleted videos, Mr Jones criticised Muslim immigrants to Europe and also denounced a transgender cartoon.
