Samsung with its Galaxy phone line retained the phone crown but lost ground to upstart Huawei by shipping 73 million units, an 8 percent decline year over year.

"The importance of Huawei overtaking Apple this quarter can not be overstated", said Ben Stanton, a senior analyst at Canalys, which also reported the shift in quarterly market share. This is a new trend where "affordable ultra-premium" is wooing aspiring rich and young consumers away from more expensive offerings from likes of Samsung and Apple.

In line with decreased smartphone shipments, global shipments of smartphone panels (based on open cell models) also dipped 1.7% on year to 930 million units in the first half despite the growing demand for all-screen and profile-cut panels.

According to IDC, the global smartphone market in Q2 2018 declined 1.8% annually to 342 million units.

It's the first time since 2010 that Apple has not been ranked number one or two.

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei has surpassed Apple to become the world's second-largest smartphone seller, a market research firm said.

Despite the minor differences in data, all the three reports communicate the same thing - that the global smartphone declined around 2-3%, Huawei grew rapidly and overtook Apple, and Samsung is seated at the top even though its shipments dropped.

Meanwhile, Ryan Reith, program vice president with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers, pointed out in a statement released with the numbers, by way of a reminder, that Apple has moved into the top spot during each of the last two holiday quarters following its product refresh. Despite shipping fewer units than analysts had expected, Apple reported that iPhone revenue was up 20 percent from the same period past year.

Huawei on Tuesday said overall it had raked in 15 percent higher revenue in the first six months of 2018, steady at levels seen a year ago. He also said Honor's competition with Xiaomi, another China's leading smartphone brand, is over.

On the flipside, Samsung still topped the list at 71.5 million units, in spite of a 10.4% decline in shipments from previous year.

As we are getting closer to the launch of Apple iPhone X series 2018, new rumours about the upcoming devices keep on popping online. "Huawei's exclusion from the us has forced it to work harder in Asia and Europe to achieve its goals". Huawei failed in its recent bid to launch in the United States after government action against companies deemed a security threat.
