Dragon Ready for Return Ahead of Commercial Crew Announcement
03 August, 2018, 13:13
Elon Musk's Space Exploration Technologies Corp is set to beat Boeing Co in the battle to be the first company to ferry American astronauts to the International Space Station.
The names of the astronauts will be unveiled at a news conference at 11 a.m. ET that will be streamed live online on CBC News. The Starliner and Crew Dragon will launch American astronauts on American-made spacecraft from American soil to the International Space Station for the first time since NASA retired its Space Shuttle Program in 2011.
The setback comes as Boeing is entrenched in a competition with Elon Musk's SpaceX to deliver astronauts to the space station, replacing the Russian rockets now used for that goal.
Now, both SpaceX and Boeing are each working on spacecraft that will enable NASA to send astronauts with American spacecraft.
NASA will announce which astronauts will fly with Boeing and SpaceX at an event Friday at the agency's Johnson Space Center in Houston. The space agency, in 2014, had joined forces with SpaceX and Boeing to build the Crew Dragon lifting-off atop the Falcon 9 rocket and the Starliner spacecraft to lift-off atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket, respectively.
"Both partners said they really wanted to have an uncrewed flight test to make sure the integrated rockets, spacecraft and re-entry systems are all working as created to be able to ensure the integrated system is functioning".
Meanwhile, SpaceX seems to be carrying on as planned, since there has been no news as of this writing that the company might also push back the first manned mission of its Crew Dragon.
Observing the climate should be NASA's "top priority", according to 43 percent of those surveyed, who chose from six possible options.
"To meet NASA's requirements, the commercial providers must demonstrate that their systems are ready to begin regular flights to the space station", NASA said in its blog posting. Since then, NASA has been forced to rely exclusively on Russia's increasingly expensive Soyuz spaceships to get to the International Space Station (ISS), in which the U.S. government has invested about $100 billion. If history is any guide, the crews taking the spotlight on Friday will have even more time to train.
Each company's new ship could be test-launched (without any astronauts inside) by the end of the year. "The systems will be operated in the actual environment to test it and ensure it's ready for crew".
SpaceX has not publicly revised its Crew Dragon schedule.
It was expected that Boeing will launch the vehicle in August, unmanned, but the latest news suggests that, most likely, start will take.
There will be at least eight astronauts announced tomorrow - each crewed test flight will have at least two astronauts.
