Lower phone sales hurt Samsung profit

The profit growth in the memory chip business began to stabilize this year but it is still the lion's share of Samsung's bottom line.

Although the company's semiconductor business achieved record high operating profits of 11.6 trillion won, the earnings were lower than expected, with market forecasts averaging 12 trillion won. While Samsung's revenue declined by 4% to 58.5 trillion ($52 billion), its net profit remained nearly flat at 11.04 trillion won ($10 billion). Samsung's overall operating profits slid almost 5% sequentially to KRW14.87 trillion in the second quarter.

Now, Samsung has also given a price cut to the popular Galaxy J6 smartphone for the second time. Revenue was also down 20 percent year on year to 24 trillion won. "Earnings from LCD also declined from the previous quarter as the shipment and average panel price continued the downward trend".

The device sports 18.5:9 screen providing almost 15 per cent more display area without increasing the overall size of the handset, the company said. During the second quarter, its semiconductor business generated 11.61 trillion won ($10.39 billion) in operating profit, almost 80 percent of the entire operating income. It offset weak demand for Samsung-made air conditioners.

While Google's tablet business is going through an existential crisis, Samsung went ahead and today introduced a flagship upgrade to its Galaxy Tab series.

Higher marketing expenses and the disappointing performance of the flagship S9 smartphone, which fell short of its sales target, weighed on its mobile performance, Samsung said.

We already know that the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 will launch of August 9, but it appears that the South Korean firm has quietly confirmed the release date for its new phablet as well.

Samsung said demand for DRAM chips, its main memory product, would stay strong in the second half thanks to the growth of server data centres used for cloud computing.

"At Samsung, we believe tablets play an increasingly important role in making lives easier and improving the mobile experience for everyone", said DJ Koh, President and CEO of Samsung Electronics.

The company spent 8 trillion won (7.2 billion USA dollars) in capital expenditure in the second quarter, including 6.1 trillion won (5.5 billion US dollars) for the chip business and 1.1 trillion won (984 million US dollars) for the display panel division.
