Anyone walking into one of the 14,000 participating restaurants across the US and purchasing a Big Mac will receive the special coin, USA Today reported, and they can redeem the new currency for a free Big Mac for the rest of the year - or keep the coin if they're into kitschy souvenirs.
"Clearly, we've gotten a little more sophisticated in our menu development", McDonald's CEO Steve Easterbrook said in a phone interview.
To celebrate the 50 anniversary of the Big Mac, McDonald's today unveiled the MacCoin, a limited edition global currency* backed by the internationally iconic Big Mac that fans across the world can get their hands on starting August 2 to share, collect or redeem.
Last year, the Burger chain sold 1.3 billion BigMacs so it is easy to see why they made the decision to dive into the cryptocurrency world.
Each coin, which has no cash value, can be redeemed for one free Big Mac at a participating McDonald's restaurant only through the end of the year.
The MacCoin will be redeemable at 14,000 US locations so chances are there'll be one close to you that'll take what the fast food empire is hailing as the "first fully food-back global currency".
As with many of its popular and long-lasting menu items, the idea for the Big Mac came from a franchisee.
McDonalds has said that more than 6.2 million MacCoins will be available across USA restaurants from Thursday, with the offer running all the way to the end of 2018, or until the MacCoins run out.
There will be five different designs, in seven different languages, for the five decades of the Big Mac.
In 1967, Michael James "Jim" Delligatti lobbied the company to let him test the burger at his Pittsburgh restaurants.
Jim Delligatti died previous year.
