The eclipse is slated to last almost 1 hour 43 minutes - the longest in about a century.

The July 2018 lunar eclipse will be the longest one till June 9, 2123.

A lunar Eclipse occurs when the Earth is between the Moon and the Sun and the heavenly bodies all in a line.

"It's called a blood moon because the light from the sun goes through the earth's atmosphere on its way to the moon, and the earth's atmosphere turns it red in the same way that when the sun goes down it goes red", Andrew Fabian, professor of astronomy at the University of Cambridge, told Reuters.

The last total lunar eclipse graced the night skies with its presence on the night of January 31, 2018, and was the spectacular Super Blue Blue Blood Moon combo. The longest total lunar eclipse of the last century was on July 16, 2000 and lasted for 1 hour and 46.4 minutes, according to EarthSky.

According to the Science News, Nigeria will experience total lunar eclipse, which would be is fully visible in Lagos. Unlike a solar eclipse, the lunar event can be viewed without wearing protective eye gear. The eclipse will be mainly visible in Europe, Africa, Asia and Australasia, as well as some parts of South America. When the sunlight travels through the atmosphere, the shorter (bluish) wavelengths scatter, leaving only the longer (reddish) wavelengths to actually make it to the lunar surface.

The eclipse will coincide with Mars' closest approach to Earth in 15 years to offer skygazers a thrilling astronomical double bill on July 28, astronomers say.

"In the middle of a lunar eclipse it can look as if a red planet has taken up residence near the Earth - they are both eerie and lovely and I'll certainly be looking out for it!" It will occur on July 27 and it going to be unique.

All right, so when is the next blood moon that we'll be able to see from America?

Qatar is one of the countries where the longest lunar eclipse will be witnessed in totality.

"This smaller and slower-moving full moon takes more time to cross the Earth's shadow than does a full moon that is closer to Earth and moving faster in orbit". Colours at the blue end of the spectrum - like violet, blue and green, get scattered by earth's atmosphere while the longer wavelength, red end of the spectrum gets directed on to the surface of the moon.

The neighboring planet will appear unusually large and bright, a mere 57.7 million kilometers from Earth on its elliptical orbit around the sun.

Due to pollution, people in some metro cities in India may not be able to view the eclipse in its full glory, but those in the countryside should get a good view of the phenomenon.

Do you need special glasses to look at the moon?
