The lunar eclipse will end at 11.14pm, with a total duration of one hour and 42 minutes. Meanwhile, viewers in Europe are reasonably well-positioned to see the lunar eclipse - you'll likely see a partial Blood Moon - but those located in North Africa won't be able to watch (other than through webcasts).

So where can you see the total lunar eclipse?

NIGHT sky watchers are in for a treat this Friday evening - cloudless skies permitting - as the longest total lunar eclipse of the 21 century is expected to occur.

Because of this, it gives the moon a reddish-orange colour on the moon, which is why it's called a blood moon.

Finally, contrary to solar eclipses, lunar eclipses can be viewed without any eye protection. On July 27, the earth, moon, and sun will come to adjust in a ideal line, which will cause the wonder.

When the white light from the Sun hits the Earth's atmosphere the blue colours in the white are scattered, meaning only the red colours will hit the moon giving it an eerie tint. However, it won't be visible from North America.

This will be a historical eclipse as it will last three hours and 55 minutes, making it the longest eclipse of this century.

According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the lunar eclipse will begin in the wee hours of July 28 morning. That's how it gets the dramatic-sounding "blood moon" nickname.

Across Australia everyone will see the moon enter Earth's shadow at the exact same moment but those in Western Australia are the only ones who will be able to watch the entirety of the eclipse.

Central and Eastern Africa: The entire eclipse will be visible in Central and Eastern Africa, with totality beginning in major cities like Cairo and Nairobi at 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. local time, respectively. However, the partial eclipse will be visible for nearly four hours. Image: AAP What is a lunar eclipse?

For the second phase, as the moon continues on its orbit, there will be another partial lunar eclipse, which will be visible from around 2:43 am IST.

After this, you will witness the next lunar eclipse on December 31, 2028. The last time Mars was bigger and brighter than this was in 2003, when it was less than 56 million kilometres away from Earth.
