A high risk warning has been issued by the Health and Environment Department of Kansas for the West Nile virus infections (WNV) for various parts of the states.

The two mosquito diseases of concern for CT residents are West Nile virus and Zika virus. Around one person out of 5 West Nile infected people develops symptoms such as fever among others while around one out of 150 people develop symptoms such as swelling of the brain or the brain tissue, which in certain rare cases, can result in the person dying. In 2017, a total of 90 IL residents tested positive for West Nile virus, eight of these cases were fatal.

This is the first pool of mosquitoes to test positive this year in Kankakee County. The adult mosquito control program will only be used in limited situations to reduce disease-infected adult mosquitoes.

Residents may contact the health department at 610-278-5117 if they are concerned about an area of standing water that may be breeding mosquitoes. These symptoms generally appear two to 14 days following the bite of an infected mosquito. Routine spraying of insecticide will also continue throughout the state.

West Nile fever causes mild flu-like symptoms in some people. However most people make a full recovery.

Keeping window and door screens in good fix. People older than 60 and people with compromised immune systems have the greatest risk of developing severe complications.

For more tips you can visit the MSDH website.

As mosquitoes use water to lay eggs and reproduce, health officials recommend draining or reducing standing water amounts, such as in pools, containers, rain downspouts, and so on. Always follow the package directions when using repellents. Dunks can be picked up at the Health Department during normal business hours, Monday - Friday, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The peak came in 2003 when there were 73, the health department said.
