Uber, Lyft suspend driver who recorded St. Louis passengers

Uber suspends driver who live-streamed St. Louis passengers St Louis Uber driver live-streamed hundreds of passengers

In an interview with the St Louis Post Dispatch, Gargac said he had enlisted the help of his wife to remove any racist, homophobic or overly sexual comments.

There were about 700 rides given by Gargac since March through Uber and Lyft and nearly all of them were recorded, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Gargac claimed that the primary objective of the recordings was for security, but also contradicted himself, saying that he started driving for the services in order to create the livestream, according to the Post-Dispatch.

"First names, and occasionally full names, are revealed". Following the report, an Uber spokesperson confirmed to the Post-Dispatch that the company had "suspended Gargac after reviewing his videos".

"It's a totally different story to have a ride-share driver record passengers conservations and passenger actions for the objective of boosting their brand, or entertaining followers, or embarrassing individuals who get in the vehicle".

Gargac said he's trying to "capture the natural interactions between myself and the passengers", and he films for security purposes, as well.

To make matters even more concerning, Gargac has a wife, a human woman who knew about the channel and even helped him.

Uber and Lyft have suspended a driver following a report that he livestreamed passengers without their expressed consent. People were sometimes named in the videos, the Post-Dispatch said, while homes were also shown. He gave a reporter his business card. "You know, the internet is a insane place".

In an earlier statement to CNN, Lyft noted that its drivers are "required to follow applicable local laws and regulations, including with regard to the use of any recording device".

A UBER driver in Missouri used a webcam to secretly record unsuspecting customers - then broadcast the footage on the internet for the world to see.

Obviously, this legality can help people in other cases, if they're being personally harassed or targeted and need proof for legal action. "Recording passengers without their consent is illegal in some states, but not Missouri". There are other two-party consent states, where two participants in a conversations are required to consent to being recorded.

"I think it's a larger question about privacy and technology for society, what we do when the norms around a particular technology are violated", Rosenblat said. "I didn't like it", he said. There has been an upward trend in recording passengers, she said, driven by "good reasons" like ensuring drivers' safety, or being able to vouch for the quality of their service.
