Microsoft building cheap cloud console to complement the Xbox Two

The first will be a traditional box in the vein of the Xbox One and Xbox 360. However, Sony enjoys a very healthy lead and Microsoft won't catch them.

One of the new devices coming from Microsoft will be a traditional console, much like the Xbox One.

The console is reportedly being developed under the codename Scarlett, and will be available in two primary configurations. One of the consoles will be a traditional hardware-based one whereas the second will actually be a streaming device. We can expect for this console to pack in a processor and GPU capable of delivering 4K gaming goodness that gamers will no doubt expect in the next decade. There will be two different next-gen Xbox machines: one will be a traditional console; the other a low-power device made for streaming games.

Now this does not stop Microsoft from making a dedicated streaming Scarlett box, but Microsoft could get a lot more value from their near 700 million Windows 10 users if playing the best games would be as simple as clicking an icon. That's because Microsoft is thought to have solved the latency issue streamed games suffer from by including just enough hardware in the box to run a portion of the game locally, which is referred to as a "slice". Cloud gaming demonstrations aren't anything new; there was a ton of talk in the run-up to the last generation about whether streaming games or physical hardware would win the market.

It's a new way of tackling the problem, but also a bit of a risk for Microsoft.

The streaming-only console should be significantly cheaper than the full console, and they'll both be arriving in 2020. Will they accept that such a box requires a subscription payment to keep functioning? Though Microsoft expects its game streaming service to work on "all devices", the leaked info indicates that its own streaming box would be the preferred method - it is allegedly created to offer a better experience than you'd get with, for example, a tablet. These are all questions Microsoft will be asking and trying to answer in the run up to an expected 2020 launch. Of particular interest, though, is that the streaming service this supports won't be limited to consoles; you can stream the games on your phone, your computer, and presumably anything else with the firepower to handle the necessary onboard tasks.
