It was announced at ComicCon that trans activist and actress Nicole Maines has been cast as the character Nia Nal, aka Dreamer, a young trans woman and superhero who receives guidance from Supergirl in the show.
On Saturday, Supergirl also announced two other additions to the cast: new series regular April Parker Jones as Colonel Haley and David Ajala (Nightflyers, Falling Water), who will recur as the DC comics character Manchester Black.
Maines hopes the "Supergirl" casting is part of larger wave of the "right representation" of the trans community.
Although she's enthusiastic for the new gig, carrying the banner brings with it a hefty responsibility.
"I think we're in a time right now where more than ever representation in the media matters", she said. "And what we see on television has a very dramatic effect on our society".
"I've just been doing a lot of auditions lately because a lot of different shows have been really eager to tell the stories of transgender people, especially transgender youth", Maines told the audience.
"Cisgender actors don't take trans roles out of malice", Maines began.
"We have straight people playing gay people all the time and that's because there isn't a larger conversation around - there's not so much harmful rhetoric flying around that they are parading around, dressing up, pretending", she said. And so having trans people play trans roles shows that we are valid in our identity and we deserve to exist as we do. In addition, Falling Waters'David Ajala heads to the series as Manchester Black, a man with a dark past who uses charm and humor to deflect the pain that comes from his brutal missions.
Nicole has gone on to an acting career, winning a 2016 GLAAD award for her performance in United States show Royal Pains.
