Ireland women take sixth at Rugby World Cup Sevens

Noah Ferguson | 23 July, 2018, 05:11

New Zealand, however, shrugged off the setback and responded with a clinical second-half performance.

New Zealand beat a tough, physical France team 29-0 in the final in San Francisco to defend their title on Saturday (Sunday NZT).

Eagles superstar Perry Baker, who had written in his exclusive tournament preview for ESPN that he believed the hosts could win the trophy and that "the sky is the limit for rugby in America", scored two tries while Martin Iosefo, Danny Barrett and Carlin Isles also touched down in the final game of the day.

The floodgates opened in the second half and tries to Jerry Tuwai, Josua Tuisova, Semi Radradra and Jasa Veremalua turned what was a willing contest into a rout.

New Zealand barely engaged second gear in defeating Rugby World Cup Sevens debutantes Mexico 57-0 in the Round of 16 before powering past Ireland in the Championship quarterfinals.

In the women's competition, top seeds Australia and New Zealand coasted through their opening two matches, while France and the US also made it through to the Cup semi-finals.

Joeseva Ravouvou scored the opening and clinching try for New Zealand, while Dylan Collier and Regan Ware also crossed over for the All Blacks Sevens.

The Kiwis shut out Fiji with disciplined defence until the Fijians added a late consolation try to Alosio Naduva.

Substitute Gayle Broughton fired New Zealand back in front when she stepped inside two United States defenders before storming 80m to score under the posts straight after halftime.

England weren't done though, with Ruaridh McConnochie busting through multiple tackle attempts down the left wing to score another great solo try and put the score at 19-12 in New Zealand's favour with three minutes left.
