The state Department of Health & Human Services would only say the victim was an adult living in the southeastern part of the state and that it occurred last week.

Mosquitoes captured by health officials in Burlington this week have tested positive for West Nile virus.

Mosquitoes infected with the West Nile Virus have been found in six different locations across New Orleans.

Bosch says wear long sleeves if you can when outdoors, use mosquito repellent and avoid being outdoors at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active. About one in five people infected develop other symptoms, including a fever. The North Shore Mosquito Abatement District, a local government agency tasked with monitoring and reducing mosquito-borne illnesses, said that with the positive identification in Wilmette, all 13 of the north suburban communities that the agency serves has now had a positive batch of mosquitoes in 2018.

"We are seeing a typical summer pattern where West Nile virus activity starts in the warmer areas of the Central Valley and gradually moves west into Contra Costa County as our weather warms up." said Steve Schutz, Ph.D., scientific programs manager.

Mosquitoes in North Carolina are also known to carry other illnesses that can infect both humans and animals.

Dumping or draining standing water to prevent mosquitoes. From 2012-2017, there were 25 reported cases of West Nile virus in the state and seven reported deaths.

Officials also recommend wearing long sleeves and trousers as well as using repellent when outdoors.

"One of the most important things people can do is to find and dump out any standing water they see inside and outside their homes so mosquitoes can't breed", said Elise Rothschild, director of the county Department of Environmental Health.
