A 71-year-old man died of infection of the vibrio vulnificus bacteria after eating oysters at a restaurant in Florida. The county did not have any vibrio cases past year but there were confirmed cases and one death in 2016.
Vibrio vulnificus is a rare disease but infections will lead to vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain, according to the departments website.
WWSB also warns that bacteria can enter the system through an open wound, so be wary swimming with cuts.
"That site may be tender, raw, warm to the touch, kind of appear as a skin infection and then once again as the bacteria progresses or infection progresses, it can get into the blood causing a more severe illness", Drennon said.
"Most infections occur from May through October when water temperatures are warmer". In 2017, there were two cases and also no fatalities.
Through this oyster, he contracted a gastrointestinal illness related to a flesh-eating bacteria on the oyster.
Leon, Madison, Suwannee, Taylor, and Gadsden counties have had no confirmed cases of flesh eating bacteria. Individuals who exhibit symptoms after entering the water with open wounds or after eating raw shellfish are urged to see their doctor.
Florida Health recommends not going in the water if you have fresh cuts or scrapes.
