Georges Lemaître, astronomer who proposed Big Bang Theory

Kristine Garrett | 19 July, 2018, 14:27

Google will doodle the founder of the Big Bang theory, Fr. Georges Lemaître, on July 18th in celebration of his 124th birthday. Lemaitre is known as the Big Bang theory, which says that the universe originated from an atom, which he called the cosmic egg.

Soon enough, however, Lemaitre's theory was backed up by Edwin Hubble's observations.

Lemaitre then set about achieving the second half of his dream, becoming an ordained Catholic priest in 1923.

This clever Doodle displays the constantly expanding universe Lemaitre first envisioned, "surrounded by galaxies expanding outward just as he said they would".

It was during his time at a Jesuit secondary school where he first felt the urge to become a priest, but also a scientist. The German -born theoretical physicist is known to have reported back saying, "Your calculations are correct, but your physics is atrocious".

His theory was confirmed and established by Edwin Hubble which is also regarded as Hubble's Law in these contemporary times.

Post, this Lemaitre had delivered his lecture and theory to a group of some famous and respected scientists in 1933 at the California Institute of Technology, Einstein applauded him and quoted: "This is the most lovely and satisfactory explanation of creation to which I ever listened". He studied physics at the University of Cambridge, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This theory suggests that the universe began with a huge explosion of a small super-atom. In 1951, Pope Pius XII publically announced that the Big Bang theory offered scientific proof of Christian religious belief regarding the origin of life, to which Lemaitre responded negatively.

He died on 20 June 1966, shortly after having learned of the discovery of cosmic microwave background radiation, which provided further evidence for his own intuitions about the birth of the universe.
