The CW Developing Batwoman TV Series With Lesbian Superhero Lead

Hannah Rogers | 17 July, 2018, 23:36

But it's the first time an openly gay superhero would get top billing in a live-action show or movie.

Today, it was reported that the CW was developing a Batwoman television series and fans have taken to social media to share their thoughts on the news.

The series will focus on the titular character's alter-ego Kate Kane, who is the featured hero in the streets of Gotham City.

"But don't call her a hero yet", the potential series' logline adds. Even so, the character (and Gotham City) is still going to make an appearance on the annual fall crossover between The Flash, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl. But don't call her a hero yet: "in a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham's symbol of hope".

Originally introduced in the 1950s as a love interest for Batman to dispel rumors of homosexuality, Batwoman has since been the highest-profile openly gay character from any DC comic.

Batwoman could soon be coming to the "Arrow"-verse".

Deadline reports that Berlanti Productions is about to begin casting for the role.

Dries has superhero credentials - she started her writing career on the CW/WBTV Smallville before a seven-season run on The Vampire Diaries, on which she rose to executive producer and showrunner. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Geoff Johns are also involved in the development, which right now is just at the "script deal" stage.

The character of Kate Kane has not been cast yet (though may I suggest Bridget Regan?), but we'll probably find out who will play the fiery vigilante before the DC crossover event airs in December 2018. Johns also is producing the long-gestating Batgirl DC feature at Warner Bros., which switched writers this past spring. On TV, Batwoman first appeared in animated series Batman: The Brave and the Bold, which premiered on Cartoon Network in 2008.

Batwoman first appeared in print in the early days of Detective Comics but was later ditched, making her grand revival in 2006. The Silver Age Batwoman is best known as Kathy Kane, who was created in order to offset rumors that Batman and Robin were homosexuals.
