To celebrate World Emoji Day, more than 70 new characters are coming to the emoji palette.

The update includes more than 70 images of people, animals, food and other objects.

The new emojis are meant to better represent the vast demographic of users, including all different hair types and skin tones, as well as more expressive faces. There's also an infinity symbol, and a new male and female superhero.

Apple says these will be available on all its platforms "later this year", which would mean not iOS 12 but a subsequent release like, say, iOS 12.1.

In a statement, they said: "Let's see Twitter alive with more emojis than it has ever seen".

New emojis include Party face Pleading face and Face with hearts

When is World Emoji Day?

World Emoji Day was founded by Jeremy Burge, the creator of Emojipedia, which is an unofficial Wikipedia for emojis.

Today is World Emoji Day, and Apple is already looking forward to the future of emojis. For the most meaningful of reasons, actually - the calendar emoji displays Jul 17, which is also the date that the iCal app was first shown off at MacWorld Expo in 2002, running on the groovy sunflower iMac G4. Apple said they are coming "later this year in a free software update", and later noted they'll be in "a free update to iOS 12".

During the WWDC this year, Apple also announced that Animoji, which allow users to animate the facial expressions of emojis using facial recognition technology, is getting an update. "In particular the redheads and curly-haired options are likely to be popular", CNN quoted him as saying.
