Trump blasts May over Brexit during United Kingdom visit, casting pall over ties

Bennie Garza | 13 July, 2018, 14:42

Mrs May noted that more than one million Americans work for UK-owned firms, telling Mr Trump: "As we prepare to leave the European Union, we have an unprecedented opportunity to do more".

As Trump is expected to discuss a possible post-Brexit trade deal and other global issues with May, organizers of Friday's demonstrations say there is no shortage of issues that will inspire mass numbers of people to attend.

The trip includes meetings with Prime Minister Theresa May, who has described the United States as Britain's strongest ally, and is determined to secure a trade deal after the country acts on Brexit and leaves the European Union in March 2019.

Mr Trump has trashed the PM's Brexit policy and her own handling of the crunch negotiations in a remarkable interview with The Sun.

Trump also said that he was "very saddened" to see Johnson was leaving government and said he hoped "he goes back in at some point".

Mr Trump will spend Friday meeting the Queen at the Sandhurst military academy outside London and holding talks with Prime Minister Theresa May at her Chequers country home before heading to Scotland.

Trump also said that if May's Brexit plans included sticking to European Union rules it could prevent a US-UK trade deal.

Mr Trump and his wife Melania flew from London by Marine One helicopter and swept into the palace courtyard in the armoured presidential limousine nicknamed The Beast. "So I think that's the effect the balloon will have".

"And, frankly speaking, the idea that we limit the rights to protest, we limit the rights to free speech because it may cause offense to a foreign leader is a very, very slippery slope".

As the Trumps dined with the Mays, protests in the British capital took place outside Winfield House, the residence of US Ambassador Woody Johnson.

The US president and First Lady Melania Trump's arrival was marked by a military ceremony, with bandsmen of the Scots, Irish and Welsh Guards playing the Liberty Fanfare, Amazing Grace and the National Emblem march.

After the president and First Lady Melania Trump arrived at Stansted Airport, Trump said he was "fine" about any protests during his visit.

The evening host British Prime Minister Theresa May also appeared to take the dress code seriously, wearing a sleeveless red gown with a noticeably high slit. Two years ago, Khan first crossed Trump's radar by criticizing his call for a ban on Muslim immigration to the US.

The pound has dropped significantly Friday after President Donald Trump warned that British Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit plans will "probably kill" any US-UK trade deal after Britain has left the EU.

The Trumps trip to the United Kingdom is not an official state visit, however, tomorrow the couple will visit the Sandhurst military academy and hold talks at May's country house, Chequers.

May's government has recently been shaken following at least three resignations of senior members of her cabinet - including Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Brexit Minister David Davis, following disagreements on how to exit the EU. Just Say No and No To Trump, No To War.

As thousands of people prepare to protest on the streets of London on Friday and as an inflatable blimp depicting him as a baby in a nappy is prepared to be flown above central London, Trump also claimed that he is in fact very popular in the country.
