Investigation into 1955 murder of black U.S. teenager Emmett Till reopened

DOJ reopens Emmett Till case after ‘new information’ arises report Investigation into 1955 murder of black U.S. teenager Emmett Till reopened

The U.S. Justice Department has reopened the case of Emmett Till, the 14-year-old black teen who was reportedly brutally murdered by two white males in MS in 1955.

The report doesn't indicate what the new information might be. Citing "new information", the US Justice Department has reopened the investigation into Till's death. The government hasn't specified if any new charges will be added, or if the prosecution will bring a case to anyone involved. She inspires a movement that elevated Martin Luther King to world historical status, passed the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights - that national infrastructure was built by the Till case.

Carolyn Donham, now 84 years old, admitted to author Timothy Tyson that she had lied during her testimony about Till grabbing her, whistling and making sexual advances at a store owned by her husband - who was charged with the teen's murder.

Four days later, on August 28, 1955, Roy Bryant and his half-brother, J.W. Milam, rousted Emmett from his bed in the middle of the night, ordered him into the bed of a pickup and eventually beat him viciously before shooting him in the head.

No other information is known in regards to the reopening of the case. An all-white jury acquitted the men who were accused of murdering Till. The two men later admitted in a magazine interview to killing Till, but were never retried.

CHANG: What do you make of the Department of Justice reopening this investigation? Only one resulted in in a federal conviction since the act became law, that of Ku Klux Klansman James Ford Seale for kidnapping two black teenagers, Charles Moore and Henry Dee, who were killed in MS in 1964. Relatives of Till pushed Attorney General Jeff Sessions to reopen the case previous year after publication of the book. Three years later, a MS grand jury declined to issue new charges.

"None of us wants to do anything that jeopardizes any investigation or impedes, but we are also very interested in justice being done", she told the outlet, declining to discuss specifics. Abducted from the home where he was staying, Till was beaten and shot, and his body was found weighted down with a cotton gin fan in the Tallahatchie River. Against advice, she demanded that his funeral be open casket.

"Deliberations took barely an hour, with one juror claiming the acquittal could've come sooner had they not stopped to have a soda", CNN reports.

"We don't know anything". "Just what did he say when he grabbed your hand?" defense attorney Sidney Carlton asked, according to a trial transcript released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation a decade ago.

The book says a white woman acknowledged she wasn't truthful when she testified that the 14-year-old Till grabbed her and whistled at her in a store in 1955.

The Duke University scholar says he shared materials including recordings of 2008 interviews with a white woman, Carolyn Donham, acknowledging that she wasn't truthful when she testified that Till made sexual advances at a MS store in 1955.

"Nothing that boy did could ever justify what happened to him", she reportedly said during a 2008 interview.

Though a judge ruled Carolyn's testimony inadmissible in court, her husband and Milam were quickly acquitted.
