The deal, subject to global clearance, makes the Mali worldwide Steven Gerrard's eighth signing for the Gers, ahead of his first managerial stint.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has hinted that the Scottish Premier League club is close to agreeing a deal with Italian outfit AS Roma for Nigerian forward Sadiq Umar.

Sadiq, whose deal is subject to global clearance and who claimed that, "in Nigeria I am compared to the legend Kanu and Emmanuel Adebayor", said: "It is very good to be here, it has been good so far and I can't wait to start".

Sadiq joins Rangers after having spent last season on loan at Torino and Dutch side NAC Breda.

He told Rangers TV: "It was not easy but when my agent said Gerrard is the head coach, I said okay no problem and was happy to come in".

Rangers had until Friday night to submit their squad for the tie with Shkupi but Sadiq could still feature against the Macedonians if the paperwork can be completed before midnight on Wednesday. Even if the plan was to stay at Roma I couldn't turn him down.

"Rangers is a good team, I'd heard the name before Gerrard came in here. I know the team are in the Europa League and I know there is a big rivalry with Celtic".

He smiled: "I don't like to say anything about myself but I am a hardworking player who always wants to help the team". Across all competitions for Angers, Coulibaly made just 23 appearances and scored only one goal.

"He asked me if I wanted to join his team, and I said yes, although I was anxious it wasn't actually Gerrard [on the phone]!"
