Solid Food Helps Babies Sleep Better

Solid Food Helps Babies Sleep Better Solid food helps babies sleep better

"We believe the most likely explanation for our findings of improved sleep is that that these babies are less hungry" said Lack, adding that solid foods might mean less regurgitation or greater feelings of being full.

They said baby rice, chosen by more than half of parents, is too bland and a "missed opportunity" to make them less fussy eaters.

The World Health Organization recommends that parents wait until the age of six months to give their infants solid foods to ensure they get the most benefit from the nutrients found in breast milk or formula.

Brown urged caution, noting that no difference in waking was seen until after five months, despite one group being introduced to solids from three months, and that self-report of infant sleep by exhausted parents was unlikely to be precise.

Differences between the two groups peaked at six months, with the early introduction group sleeping for a quarter of an hour (16.6 minutes) longer per night and their night waking frequency decreased from just over twice per night to 1.74.

Further, Lack, the Head of the Department of Pediatric Allergy at King's College London, said, "Lack of sleep can be pretty devastating for babies and their families".

The babies who were introduced to solid foods earlier than others were able to have a longer, steadier and undisturbed sleep and also suffered fewer serious sleep problems, than those who were fed nothing but breast milk for the first six months.

Diet is brought up most often in discussions of physical fitness and weight, but the foods you eat have a profound impact on almost all of your body's functions - including sleep.

Babies who begin eating solid food early tend to sleep longer and more soundly, a new study shows.

First foods can include mashed or soft cooked fruits and vegetables such as apple, pear and potato, sweet potato or parsnips. Infants who started solids early also woke up about 9% less often. She said that "while there was a short period of time in which the infants [in the study] seemed to sleep better, it can be argued that the benefits [of early solid foods] do not outweigh the risks and possible future negative effects". The babies were divided into two groups.

For the latest United Kingdom research, the parents of half the children were encouraged to feed their babies solids, such as white fish or wheat, before six months, while the other half were told to stick to breast milk alone until that time.

Professor Mary Fewtrell, nutrition lead the the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) underlined that infant feeding was being reviewed. If there is any doubt about what's best for your baby, please seek advice from your doctor or health professional'.

"However, the evidence base for the existing advice on exclusive breastfeeding is over 10 years old, and is now being reviewed in the United Kingdom by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition", Fewtrell continues.
