President Trump in the UK

Bennie Garza | 12 July, 2018, 18:42

U.S. President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump arrive at Stansted Airport, Britain, July 12 2018.

Trump next heads to Windsor Castle later Friday for tea with the queen, as protesters stage a mass demonstration in London. Trump was largely steering clear of London, where protests are planned and where organizers had permission to fly a blimp over Parliament portraying the president as an orange crying baby.

After spending the night at the United States ambassador's official residence in Regent's Park, London, the U.S. president will join the Theresa May at a military base on Friday to view a joint counter-terrorism exercise involving UK and USA special forces.

"With a lot of resignations", Trump told a news conference at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels.

May's government has recently been shaken following at least three resignations of senior members of her cabinet - including Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Brexit Minister David Davis, following disagreements on how to exit the EU.

While she hopes the Trump visit will focus on trade and strengthening security ties, it is likely to be heavy on rhetoric about the transatlantic "special relationship" and short on specifics such as any details of a post-Brexit trade deal.

One Facebook page advertising a London protest against Trump's first visit to Britain as president has around 60,000 people saying they will attend.

He believes Mr Trump's visit shows his respect for the United Kingdom, as his political career would get more of a boost from staying at home and campaigning in America.

While tens of thousands of Brits are set to protest Donald Trump's visit on Thursday, one pub in west London will be welcoming him with open arms.

"This week we have an opportunity to deepen this unique trading relationship and begin discussions about how we will forge a strengthened, ambitious and future-proof trade partnership".

A campaign is also underway to get "American Idiot", a 2004 song by the US punk rock band Green Day, to the top of the UK Singles Chart.

They use these traditional song to frame satirical comment on the controversial US President's many scandals, including his infamous comments about grabbing women without his consent, and his administrations approach to Islam and immigration.

For Trump, there has been no such tension with Churchill, who is revered by American conservatives for his stalwart leadership of Great Britain during World War II and his role in defeating the Nazis.

The prime minister will host a gala dinner and a meeting with Trump, giving them time to talk.
