Donald Trump: NATO allies should double defence spend goal

Bennie Garza | 12 July, 2018, 02:49

Yet Mr. Trump's criticism, which he has been repeating on Twitter for days, is uniquely poisonous. Other presidents has raised European defence spending levels in the past but he is intent on dealing with it. "And I am very happy that we are today unified in freedom as the Federal Republic of Germany", she said in an arrival statement at the NATO Summit Wednesday, according to an English translation of her remarks.

Trump, in a testy exchange with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, took issue with the USA protecting Germany when the European nation is making deals with Russian Federation.

Alluding to Trump's comments about Germany, Kerry also said that "European energy security is an important topic for allies to discuss, even when they disagree". According to a 2017 survey by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, 69 percent - including 54 percent of core Trump supporters - say North Atlantic Treaty Organisation is "essential" to USA security.

"It's very sad when Germany makes a massive oil and gas deal with Russia where we're supposed to be guarding against Russia and Germany goes out and pays billions and billions of dollars a year to Russia", he said.

He complained that German politicians have been working for Russian energy companies after leaving politics and described this as inappropriate as well.

The remarks, which came during his first engagement at the two-day gathering, reflect Mr Trump's anger that so few countries are meeting Nato's 2 per cent defence spending target.

Ahead of his trip to Europe, where he will attend NATO's annual summit before heading to the United Kingdom and then flying to Helsinki for a sit-down with Putin, Trump said the meeting with Putin "may be the easiest" on his trip.

"I'm very pleased to have this opportunity for this exchange about the economic future and migration and the future of trade relations", Merkel said. "That is very good, especially for people in eastern Germany". "We put the largest part of our military capabilities at the service of Nato.We are defending the interests of the USA". "I just don't want us to be too friendly with them like he was with Kim Jong Un, although I supported that summit", Richardson said. "It was disgraceful, destructive, and flies in the face of the actual interests of the United States of America".

NATO Secretary-General Stoltenberg later told reporters that Trump had used "very direct language" but that all NATO allies were agreed that the cost of defence spending must be spread around and that past year had seen the biggest increase in a generation.

TRT World's Simon McGregor-Wood has more details.

"President Trump's brazen insults and denigration of one of America's most steadfast allies, Germany, is an embarrassment".

Trump said: "We're protecting Germany, we're protecting France, we're protecting all of these countries". "The U.S. presence in Europe helps to protect Europe but it also helps the United States project power to the Middle East, to Africa".
