Campaign Underway To Get Green Day's 'American Idiot' To UK Number One

Hannah Rogers | 12 July, 2018, 22:48

Chart Data also reported that the song has cracked the Top 20 on Britain's official singles chart midway through the charting week.

London's mayor has given a group permission to fly a 20-foot-tall balloon depicting President Donald Trump as an angry baby over London when he visits the city on July 13.

"And it's sold 1.6 million copies, making it the 32nd best-selling single ever in the United Kingdom, ahead of hits like Britney Spears' ".Baby One More Time" and the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love", according to Official Charts.

So far the effort appears to be working, with the song checking in at No. 18 on the chart Tuesday.

The re-emergence of the decade-old song was driven by a social media campaign first launched in May, which aimed to make the song number one on the charts during Trump's visit to the UK.

Representatives for the Official Charts and Green Day didn't immediately return INSIDER's request for comment. (No. 61, though it topped the genre-rock chart).

"You'll recall that "American Idiot" was a rallying cry that blasted the George W. Bush era, though it's applicable to all future American idiots, "writes Vulture". In response to reports that Trump sent North Korean leader Kim Jong Un a copy of the Elton John song "Rocket Man", the senator joked that Kim should return the favor by giving Trump "American Idiot".

So far the push is working - it is now sitting at number 18 thanks to the help of protesters sharing the #MAIGA (Make American Idiot Great Again) message on social media.
