Attention all iced coffee, shaken tea and other cold drink lovers - soon those icy beverages may come in containers that don't use straws, if they come from Starbucks. Its straws will be replaced by sippy cup-like lids that are also plastic, but more recyclable. These straws will be available for drinks such as the Frappuccino that are meant to be consumed via straw and will be available on request. The polypropylene material used to make Starbucks' new lids "will definitely help, if [Starbucks] is committed to doing a recycling program", Morris said.

From their debut in one initial store, the cold-cup lids now are used for a small number of drinks including Draft Nitro and Cold Foam in more than 8,000 stores in the USA and Canada.

"This move is an answer to our own partners about what we can do to reduce the need for straws", said Colleen Chapman, vice president of Starbucks global social impact overseeing sustainability.

McDonald's also said last month that it would replace plastic straws with paper ones in the United Kingdom and Ireland from September. The transition will be complete in 2019, the company said.

Still, the war on plastic straws rages on.

A number of local governments have pushed to limit the use of plastic straws by passing restrictive legislation.

Other cities, like Fort Meyers, have banned plastic straws as well.

According to them, around 500 million plastic straws are getting dumped every day in the United States, meaning, approximately 12 million pounds of waste a year are generated in the country due to the usage of straws, thus threatening the marine ecosystem, BBC reported. And straws contribute only 2,000 tons to the nearly nine million tons of plastic waste that wind up in the water annually, according to the Associated Press. "There is no reason for us to. use those things". "We hope others will follow in [Starbucks'] footsteps".

The company said at least 180 million 21-centimeter-long plastic straws are used at its stores in Korea annually.

Advocacy groups, including Ocean Conservancy, welcomed the move.

Nicolas Mallos, director of the Ocean Conservancy's Trash Free Seas program, has stated that "With eight million metric tons of plastic entering the ocean every year, we can not afford to let industry sit on the sidelines, and we are grateful for Starbucks leadership in this space".
