Federer, Nadal close in on dream final

Kevin Anderson has eliminated defending champion Roger Federer from Wimbledon, scrambling back from a two-set deficit to win a marathon match, 2-6, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-4, 13-11.

Federer squandered his match point at 5-4 on Anderson's serve in the third set but it seemed like it would only be a matter of time before he moved into the semifinals for the 13th time.

A glimpse of the potential that has seen Khachanov's reputation grow came in the first game as a superb cross-court forehand helped him break.

Anderson struggled to make any impression on Federer's serve as the Swiss' guile saw him dominate, breaking for a second time when a deep forehand could only be returned long by the South African. But there was more. "Beating Roger Federer here at Wimbledon will definitely be one that I remember - especially in such a close match".

American great Pete Sampras, who won Wimbledon seven times, holds the record for most consecutive games won on serve at the tournament, winning 118 straight games on serve between the third round in 2000 and the second round in 2001.

It sounds cliché but it is one of the most important things on a tennis court.

"I guess there are other factors that play in".

"He's a big-match player", Djokovic said of the former US Open runner-up.

But he had never made it beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon until this week, carried by his booming serve. He hit 28 aces against Federer, saved 9 of 12 break points and managed to hold his own in the rare lengthy baseline rallies.

'Even at 10-All in the fifth, it's all good.

The match was played there after Novak Djokovic, having played three of his opening four matches away from Centre Court, had his request to play in the main stadium granted.

When Anderson broke again in the fourth, Federer was suddenly on the ropes.

His opponent on Wednesday is eighth-seeded Kevin Anderson, the first South African since Wayne Ferreira in 1994 to get to the last eight.

Amid all of the chaos in the women's bracket at Wimbledon, the quarterfinal round in the men's bracket boasts a lot of familiar faces.

No. 2 Rafael Nadal vs.

Like Nadal, who could strike Djokovic in the semis, Federer hasn't dropped during his charge to a 16th Wimbledon quarter-final, nearly surely a staggering record that will never be surpassed.
