ICC also posted superimposed pictures of Federer and Sachin Tendulkar in Spiderman costumes with a caption, "When greatness recognises greatness".

The eight-time champion needed only 16 minutes to win the first set against France's Adrian Mannarino.

If Federer beats Mannarino (and what a shock it would be if he does not), he will have his first properly tough examination against Gaël Monfils, who has found some prime form in an entertaining run, or the 2017 US Open finalist Kevin Anderson, who is playing up to his eighth seeding.

Federer has now won 32 straight sets at Wimbledon, two shy of his career best in 2005-06.

"I feel like a lot of aspects of my game can give him a lot of trouble", said Anderson, the first South African man in the Wimbledon quarter-finals since Wayne Ferreira in 1994.

Since he exited Wimbledon at the first-round stage past year, Anderson has enjoyed a solid return, making four finals, including his deep run at the US Open where he finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal.

Having missed Wimbledon a year ago while she prepared to have her first child in September, Serena is in pole position to win her first Grand Slam crown since becoming a mother.

Nine of the top 16 seeds in the men's draw were eliminated in the first three rounds, and the carnage is even worse in the women's draw, as one of the top 10 seeds remains in contention entering the second week.

The world No.1 will meet either fifth seed Juan Martin del Potro or Frenchman Gilles Simon, whose match was suspended due to darkness with the Argentine leading 7-6 (7-1) 7-6 (7-5) 5-7.

"I'm more concerned the World Cup final will have issues because the Wimbledon final is going on."

Federer could match that record with straight-set victories in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

All England Club chief executive Richard Lewis, meanwhile, says Wimbledon organisers will not alter the schedule to accommodate a potential England final appearance. But the 26-year-old underdog isn't ruling out an epic upset against Williams. In the women's draw it is being generated by a mix of old and young aspirants after the filleting of the top 10 which left only seventh seed Karolina Pliskova upright after six days.

Del Potro was leading Simon two sets to one when their match was suspended because of darkness Monday night. He's played there a few more times than that. "After she was complaining, they were talking in Chinese, whatever language".

'I'm looking forward to it and I'm definitely confident that I can keep going'. "But it never happened to me that the umpire changed the decision".

In her third Wimbledon quarterfinal, Cibulkova faces former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko.

Angelique Kerber is not exactly a new face.

Beaten by Serena in the 2016 final, Kerber takes on Russian 14th seed Daria Kasatkina, a 6-7 (6/8), 6-3, 6-2 victor against Belgian world number 47 Alison Van Uytvanck.
