The former Foreign Secretary says May is destroying Britain's "Brexit dream".

Hunt had been health secretary, and is a leading government backer of a compromise "soft Brexit". But furious lawmakers warned that she could split her Conservative Party trying to get her plan through Parliament.

He claims crucial decisions have been postponed, including preparations for a "no-deal" scenario, "with the result that we appear to be heading for a semi-Brexit, with large parts of the economy still locked in the European Union system, but with no United Kingdom control over that system".

Mr Davis was the first to go, followed by Mr Baker, with Mr Johnson resigning in the afternoon, then Mr Green, and then finally Mr Burns.

At least 48 Tory MPs - 15% of the party's 316-strong representation in the Commons - must write to the chairman of the backbench 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady, to trigger a no-confidence vote.

May has faced a backlash over the plan from Brexit hardliners in her Conservative Party who say it gives too many concessions to the European Union, but she has support from moderates and there has been no challenge to her leadership.

"My concern is about the policy rather than the individual", he said.

"That doesn't work, somebody else could do a better job than me".

The two resignations have left May badly exposed and raised questions over whether she will stand firm in her commitment to pursuing a "business-friendly" Brexit, or will be faced with more resignations and calls to quit herself.

The Sun, Britain's biggest-selling newspaper, said there had been "blunder after blunder" by May. Brexit-supporting lawmakers were angered by the proposals, saying they would keep Britain tethered to the bloc and unable to change its rules to strike new trade deals around the world.

In her statement to Parliament, May attempted to give an impression of business as usual, saying she would present a detailed paper onThursday on the government's negotiating position for a post-Brexit relationship with the EU.

May defended her Brexit plan to lawmakers in the House of Commons on Monday, with Johnson absent from his usual place on the Conservative front bench.

"In his resignation letter, Davis said the "'common rule book policy hands control of large swathes of our economy to the European Union and is certainly not returning control of our laws in any real sense".

Mrs May has now appointed Dominic Raab and Jeremy Hunt to replace Mr Davis and Mr Johnson.
