New Suzuki Jimny launched in Japan, to arrive in other markets soon

New Suzuki Jimny launched in Japan to arrive in other markets soon 2018 Suzuki Jimny Gets 1.5-liter Engine In Europe

It's also now expected to arrive in the United Kingdom in 2019, earlier than previously thought. Instead, Suzuki has kept the Jimny's design distinctively retro, with a tall boxy shape, flat clamshell bonnet, wide front grille and round headlights.

On the inside, the Jimny gets a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel, a dual pod instrument cluster with a central MID, dashboard mounted power window switches and climate control.

In terms of dimension, the Suzuki Jimny measures 3,395 mm in length, 1,475 mm in width, and 1,725 in height, while offering a ground clearance of 205 mm.

Suzuki's only confirmed one engine for the European market and surprisingly, it's not one of the firm's excellent BoosterJet turbocharged units.

Starting with the Kei-specced Jimny, as the Kei norms in Japan, the auto will house a 0.7-litre, three-cylinder 658cc petrol engine that produces a 64PS of max power and 96Nm of maximum torque.

Power will come from a 1.5 litre petrol engine, which Suzuki promise will offer enough torque low down for sticky off-road situations. This naturally aspirated four-cylinder K15B engine makes 75 kW and 130 N.m (up from the 63 kW and 110 N.m offered by the outgoing 1,3-litre), and will again be offered with the choice of a five-speed manual gearbox or four-speed automatic transmission. CO2 stands at 154g/km and 170g/km respectively. A low range transfer box is also provided.

The fourth-gen Suzuki Jimny Sierra sits on a ladder-frame chassis.

An approach angle of 37 degrees, breakover angle of 28 degrees, and departure angle of 49 degrees is how the little mountain goat from Japan stacks up off the beaten path. The new Jimny sticks with low range gear selector for its 4WD system to the former system to maximise its off-road adjustability. The suspension is a rigid axle setup with coil springs both front and rear. New safety systems have also been added including automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and traffic sign detection, the latter being a first for any Suzuki model.

Suzuki says the new model is scheduled to arrive in Australia during the end of this year, with full sales and deliveries to commence during the first quarter of next year. We anticipate a premium on the current car's £12,999 starting tag given the Jimny's new tech, though it should still remain a small, cheap off-roader.
