Public safety officials and infectious disease experts have deemed the areas safe, Kim Hoppe, director of public relations and corporate communications at Johns Hopkins medicine, said in a statement.

Authorities responded to reports that a small amount of tuberculosis bacteria may have been released at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore on Thursday afternoon, after a latch failed on a container, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. Further, Hopkins added, "We have confirmed that there was no risk to anyone on campus".

Both cancer research buildings were evacuated out of an "abundance of caution" but have now been cleared as safe.

An investigation is underway after people may have been exposed to Tuberculosis at Johns Hopkins, according to the hospital.

The bacteria, which usually attacks the lungs and can require months of treatment, was released from a "small sample of frozen tuberculosis" in a walkway between two cancer-research buildings, said Ms. Hoppe.

A statement from the hospital said the bacteria, used primarily for medical research, may have been inadvertently released while in transit.

"In fact, we have determined that there is actually no risk, meaning zero risk, to anybody involved", King said.

The Baltimore Fire Department was dispatched to the scene, placing a perimeter around the building while the scientists and hazmat crews figured out how to handle the incident. Patients also experience pain in the chest and even may see blood in the cough. Because of its knack for picking on the immunocompromised, TB is much more unsafe and occasionally fatal for people who also have HIV.

"About one-quarter of the world's population is believed to be infected with TB bacteria, but fewer than 10,000 cases are reported each year in the U.S". Airborne germs spread the disease from person to person. It can be fatal if it goes untreated.
