We Happy Few approved to be published in Australia

‘We Happy Few’ Australian Rating Ban Overturned Upon Review We Happy Few will release in Australia after all

Does We Happy Few releasing in Australia fill you with, ahem, Joy?

If you're interested in We Happy Few then you should check out our preview of it! In the game's dystopian version of Britain, you're encouraged to take a hallucinogenic drug called "Joy", making the tiresome and drab world of misery look like it's all happy and full of fun, like a piñata to whack until candies pop out actually being a large rat in a bag.

Australia originally refused We Happy Few a rating back in May, stating that the game was effectively in breach of the country's strict rules on the depiction of "drug misuse" and "addiction". This means that We Happy Few will now be available for purchase. Australia has a long history with game bans and cutting content, so it's nice to see We Happy Few unbanned.

More details will be published on the Classification Review Board decisions page once it's been properly prepared. This makes the game easier to progress, which the Australian Classification Board saw as "an incentive or reward for drug-use", therefore exceeding the boundaries of the relatively new R 18+ classification. Now, with the decision to award an R 18+ classification, "We Happy Few" can be sold in-stores.

Good news for Australians as it looks as though We Happy Few has been reclassified meaning that it will now officially be heading to Austrailia for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

That decision, according to the board, was driven by a new decision that the overall impact of the classifiable elements in the computer game was no greater than high.
