Want stronger, healthier sperm? Eat your nuts

Thus, a diet rich in fatty acids omega-3, antioxidants and vitamin B has a positive effect on fertility.

The results of the experiment were presented at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology taking place this week in Barcelona. The study lasted for almost four months (14 weeks), after which the researchers compared the sperm quality of both groups. The decline has been linked to factors including pollution, smoking, and unhealthy aspects of the Western-style diet, the study authors said.

Results firstly found significantly higher levels of sperm count, vitality, motility and morphology in the men randomised to the 60 g/day nut diet than in those following their usual diets free of nuts.

All over the world, cases of infertility are rising.

Scientists have claimed that healthy males aged between 18 to 35, who have an intake of 60 grams or more of a mixture of almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts, are more likely to harvest stronger semen.

Although the findings support hopeful fathers adding nuts to their diets, the researchers stress the study was carried out on healthy men who ate a western diet and therefore the results may not apply to all.

Nuts are dense foods containing many of these nutrients and other phytochemicals. Sperm as well as blood samples were tested for the participants.

Improvements in the former group were by around 16 per cent in sperm count, four per in sperm vitality, six per cent in sperm movement, and one per cent in morphology.

"We can't yet say that", said study co-author Albert Salas-Huetos of the Rovira i Virgili University in Spain.

As well as improvements in sperm count and shape, the researchers examined the quality of DNA inside the sperm. Reduction in DNA fragmentation was the main reason why the other parameters also improved he said.

Researchers recorded not just sperm parameters but also changes in several molecular factors, including sperm DNA fragmentation. This parameter is suggested as something that is often associated with male infertility.

Dr. Salas-Huetos pointed out that the results of the study can not necessarily be applied to the general population, considering that the male subjects were all healthy and fertile men who followed a western-style diet.

According to Salas-Huetos one of the limitations of the study was the inclusion of healthy males with normal fertility.
