New Ontario government shelves portion of anti-scalping law

Premier Doug Ford Announces the End of the Cap-and-Trade Carbon Tax Era in Ontario Doug Ford Just Announced That He's Lowering Gas Prices In Ontario, Here's How Much Less You'll Be Paying

The PC Party won a majority government after campaigning on axing cap-and-trade, which forced large companies to buy allowances for their carbon emissions.

The government also has to formally notify its partners in the Western Climate Initiative that it is withdrawing from the cap-and-trade system, Brooks said.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford today confirmed that, as the first order of business of Ontario's Government for the People, his cabinet revoked the regulation that punishes Ontario residents at the gas pump through a wasteful cap-and-trade carbon tax regime; this measure comes into effect July 3, 2018.

Premier Ford has said his planned 10-cent gas price cut will come courtesy of a almost five-cent reduction in provincial fuel tax, while the balance would be one of the results of eliminating the cap-and-trade program.

TORONTO-Ontario's new premier has taken a step in his plan to dismantle the province's cap-and-trade system, a move some observers say leaves businesses involved in the program grappling with uncertainty.

Ford said his government will honour contracts that have already been signed through GreenON, such as energy efficient insulation and window retrofits.

Ford's Progressive Conservative government swept to power last month, ending 15 years of Liberal rule in Ontario, Canada's most populous province and the country's economic engine, with a promise to cut corporate and personal taxes.

Ford's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday but the premier said in the statement that he believes scrapping cap and trade will put money back in Ontarians' pockets.

But Ford said businesses will benefit financially from no longer having to buy carbon credits, and Ontario will challenge Trudeau in court. "Our focus will be to give people lower gas prices, lower energy bills and a real break in their wallets in order to get our economy going and create jobs".
