Beryl weakens to tropical storm, heads for late weekend entry into Caribbean

Hurricane Beryl could hit parts of the Caribbean 'Tiny Beryl' becomes first hurricane of the season
Kristine Garrett | 07 July, 2018, 20:10

"Due to the small size of the hurricane, short-term changes in intensity, up or down, could occur over the next day or two, but Beryl is forecast to remain near hurricane strength as it nears the Lesser Antilles", forecasters warned. Beryl is moving west at 14 miles per hour.

Beryl is forecast to move over the Lesser Antilles late this weekend into early next week. Forecasters say it is unlikely to have much impact on the island, which is still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Maria past year.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to ten miles (20km) and storm force winds up to 35 miles (55km) from the centre of Beryl.

"It is possible that we could have hurricane watches up for some of those islands by tonight", said Robbie Berg, a hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center. With Alberto forming before June 1st, the official start of the hurricane season, this is the fourth consecutive year in which a preseason storm forms. The storm is moving toward the north-northwest near 5 miles per hour (7 km/h).

Meanwhile, a well defined low pressure system about midway between the southeastern United States and Bermuda is producing disorganized showers and a few thunderstorms. It remains far out in the Atlantic Ocean and is not expected to make much impact to the USA, or even Florida.

"Residents in Dominica are advised to monitor the system as some strengthening is expected and a Hurricane Watch could be issued for the island later today".

Tropical Depression Three looked more organized but hadn't strengthened on Saturday morning as it moved slowly north near the East Coast. Forecasters say the storm will likely maintain its hurricane status as it approaches and crosses the islands.

Tropical Depression 3 is located 195 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, Saturday morning and is moving north-northwest at 6 mph.

The next update on Hurricane Beryl will be issued by the Dominica Meteorological Service at 2:00 pm. "By Tuesday, a faster northeastward motion is expected to begin", forecasters said.

And we don't usually see the first hurricane anywhere in the Atlantic basin until the 10th of August, with the second named storm not usually forming until August 1st.
