Hurricane Beryl forms in Atlantic

Kristine Garrett | 06 July, 2018, 22:43

It was located 1,045 miles (1,685 kilometers) east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles on Friday morning and was moving west at 15 mph (24 kph). "Winds are forecast to be 50 miles per hour when Beryl moves through the northern Windward Islands", the DDM said. The storm's sustained winds were at 74 miles per hour.

Early Friday, Beryl was upgraded to a hurricane, making it the first hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season. Despite the predicted weakening, residents in some of the islands along Beryl's path should be prepared for heavy showers and occasional gusty winds.

As of 10 a.m., there were no coastal watches or warnings in effect, but forecasters said hurricane watches could be needed Friday night for some of the islands in the Lesser Antilles.

What started as a relatively quiet Atlantic hurricane season has quickly changed as two developments have occurred in the Atlantic over the past week.

"Beryl is also a very small storm".

However, long-term forecasts still have Beryl staying somewhat organized into the middle of next week. A favorable weather pattern during the next few hours will help the storm strengthen before it reaches the Lesser Antilles and dives into the warmer Caribbean Sea waters. Even though it's not expected to become a threat to the US mainland, the hurricane's future remains uncertain, as the forecast keeps changing. As it stands, Beryl is unlikely to be a significant threat elsewhere.

The tropical wave closest to the United States is weaker, but strengthening and given a 70 to 80 percent chance of becoming a named storm.
